Time for a new fence

OK - it's WAY past time for a new fence. So after a trip to Lowes for fencing materials, and taking the week off, we get everything delivered on Monday. After getting everything inventoried and picking up some last minute things, I decide to start on it Tuesday morning. Tuesday had my pal Jim helping tear down the East section of the old fence and getting the fence posts set. Like a bonehead, I forgot to get pictures of the old fence before beginning the project (OK - I was actually a little embarrassed as well ... but still forgot).

Here's how bad the old fence was:

Here's the new East Section after the end of Day Two:

Gettin' tired of building a fence

So after Wednesday's victory over the East section, I decided to take on the Driveway section. This side is actually a little shorter in length, so I figured, "no big deal," and took the old fence down. Well... the shortest section turned out to be a lot harder than the first. All of the posts in the first section came out with very little effort and none of the posts had to be drilled out - piece of cake. Not so much with this section. 4 of the 8 posts decided they didn't want to just lift out like the others so far. Nope - they had rotted off inside the concrete plugs and required using auger bits to remove enough material to stand-in the new steel posts.

Taking down the fence took less than an hour, since I decided to just load each section straight into the truck. After making a dump run, I swung by Tractor Supply Company and picked up a Hi-Lift jack and used it to get the remaining posts out, and discovered the bad news about those needing to be drilled out.

Here's a shot just before the trip to the dump:

I also had to make a run to Home Depot for more stringers, since the San Angelo Fence Company apparently couldn't measure for crap in 1985 when the house was built.

No more Fred Flintstone

Labor Day Weekend, I make the push to get the last of the bad flooring cut out of there and clean up the edges.

With that picture taken (and out of the way) today was about welding in the floor pans and other various sheet metal patches to complete the floor. I had ordered some 'intermediate' panels from CJ Pony Parts and only the passenger side actually showed up. But, the driver side wasn't in need of replacement, so no biggie. After cutting all of the bad sheet metal out, and test-fitting the after-market floor pans, I discovered that there would be some rather large holes the new panels didn't quite cover. So, I located the mangled piece of driver side firewall/floor pan that I hadn't tossed yet (I was not kind to it pulling it off the front clip) and spent a couple hours hammering it back into shape - since there was no way I could duplicate the valleys and folds in the panel using new sheet metal, after all. The passenger side required some sneakiness and wasn't as complicated as the driver side... so I found an old PC in the scrap trailer and recycled part of its cover for my new firewall/floor pan patch. Worked like a champ, and now the floors are in for real.

Just gotta grind the welds smooth and seam seal everything, then test-fit the seat platforms (CJ Pony Parts sold me what looks like Coupe platforms, which might be a bit taller than the Fastbacks). Once I get that sorted out, I can apply some Rust Bullet and call the floors done.
