Several months ago, I got this bright idea to reconfigure the webserver to handle remote terminal services so I could work on it while I was away from the house. Unfortunately, that hair-brained scheme caused FTP to drop into a normally fixable condition... normally. Since this is my machine, FTP was jacked no matter what I did to recover it... so I just lived without making any updates to the website at all.
Last weekend, I decided to attempt to repair it again without success, so I decided to reload the webserver... I've done it before without hassle, so it should go pretty smoothly.
Yeah... right.
The OS and webserver applications went on with no worries. The subsequent PHP and MySQL installs... not so much. I had fits with PHP, and when I finally got it reloaded and running, then MySQL was not working... or at least it couldn't find the databases to run these forums or my blogs. Not good.
So, I spent the next several days trying to get things happy again, and finally asked my friend Randy how to restore MySQL from just a quick copy of the data directory. He told me to just copy it all back in - including the MySQL default directories. So, I did. Except that PHP was still jacked up and I never got a chance to even see if the MySQL stuff was working or not. Great.
Fortunately, I was able to get PHP working again last night, and as a result, the MySQL was back to normal, thanks to Randy's advice.
There's one component I installed onto my PHP homepage that's causing it to blow-up, but honestly, it's something I can live without - so, no big loss there. I just hope I can get the rest of my stuff heading in the right direction with some of the changes I have planned.
